The challenge

The Hamilton Literacy Council is one of the oldest literacy councils in Canada and has helped more than 11,000 Hamiltonians improve and strengthen their literacy skills. Over time, it became clear that the website no longer met the organization’s needs. It was difficult to navigate, and unclear brand messaging failed to reflect the full scope of its work. They wanted a new site that would be user-friendly, accessible, and intuitive for key audiences, from prospective students to donors.

The solution

Hamilton Literacy Council

As a board member of the Hamilton Literacy Council, Vanessa led the website copywriting and project delivery pro bono, creating clear, accessible content tailored to a range of audiences. She conducted interviews with staff, tutors, trainers, and students to shape the messaging, and collaborated with Muse Marketing to align content with the site’s design and development.

The results

The website launched at the Hamilton Literacy Council’s 50th Anniversary event at The Gasworks in 2023. Feedback from staff, students, and tutors has been positive, with users noting the site’s clean, modern design, improved navigation, and accessible, easy-to-understand content.

Our website needed to be simple, easy to navigate, and easy to read for adults working on their literacy skills. Vanessa created clear, concise copy that said exactly what we needed, in very few words. She took the time to understand our needs and was a pleasure to work with.
