Hamilton Literacy Council

Ontario's longest-serving literacy council needed a brand new website to help showcase the important work the organization was doing in the community.

The challenge

The Hamilton Literacy Council is one of the oldest literacy councils in Canada and to date has helped more than 11,000 Hamiltonians improve their literacy skills. But their outdated, poorly functioning website was difficult to navigate and unclear brand messaging didn't adequately reflect all the important work the organization was doing in the community. The new site needed to be user-friendly, accessible and intuitive for the many different audiences - from prospective students to donors - that would be using it.

The solution

Hamilton Literacy Council

As a member of the board for the Hamilton Literacy Council, Vanessa offered her website copywriting and project management services pro-bono for the organization. Working closely with the board's Executive Director, Vanessa conducted interviews with staff, tutors, trainers and students to gather information to help craft new copy for the website. She also worked closely with local marketing agency, Muse Marketing, who designed and developed the website.

The results

The website was officially launched at the Hamilton Literacy Council's 50th Anniversary Party at the Gasworks in 2023. Feedback from staff, students, tutors and the community have been overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting about how clean, modern and fresh the new website looks, how easy it is to navigate and how accessible the site is, thanks in large part to the clear, minimal copy.

Our website needed to be simple, easy to navigate, and easy to read as our clients are adults who are working on their literacy skills. Vanessa was able to create copy that with few words said a lot, and all we needed to say! It was a delight working with Vanessa as she really listened to our needs and came through for us!
